I’m really amazed at how many myths surround seafood and a woman’s pregnancy nowadays. Recent researches have shown that low-mercury fish and seafood is indeed beneficial to both mom and baby, yet so many moms consider it a taboo during the whole nine months gap of their state. These myths – most of which I’ve heard from my grandmother – include amount of mercury in seafood dangerous to both mother and baby, excess of salt that would increase circulatory problems, and pollution. Well, providing a sufficient care for what we place in our dishes, and that we buy ONLY fresh fish, these fears are just immotivated. If I were pregnant, I wouldn’t give up on this wonderful gift of nature for my baby and I. Trust me.
Especially if it was a piece of healthy tuna (fresh or canned). You know, one of those researches I mentioned above was featured on healtytuna.com and it stated that eating tuna and seafood not just lowers chances to get pregnancy and after-partum depression, but also that being seafood rich in Omega-3 and DHA, it would also improve brain development in unborn babies. Vitamin D, lean proteins and calcium also contribute to the mom’s health during the whole time of pregnancy.
This is a true miracle of nature! And it’s also cheap, since nowadays we can buy canned fish and tuna for a buck or less.
I look forward to continue to enjoy eating fish, and especially my favourite tuna, during pregnancy. The thought of it makes me happier and relieved already. ^_^
